R. had been to Naples and particularly enjoyed sitting one afternoon on a bench overlooking the bay. She described the scene to me and asked me to paint it. Unfortunately, the picture itself was a disappointment for her. Though it was based on a sketch she approved, it was not what she had envisioned.
She reluctantly paid for the painting but kept it wrapped (opening it only so that I could photograph it). The experience taught me that the fewer expectations people had, the better they liked the final result.
