A woman who had had cervical cancer and had undergone a hysterectomy ordered this piece as a gift for the cycling-enthusiast doctor who had operated on her.
I painted the cyclist (based on a sketch by Marcel Duchamp) on a piece of Formica my partner in the studio had used as a cutting board. Thus it encompassed both the doctor's occupations: cycling and cutting.
